Where it started

More than a nice-looking website

Patricia Zapata is a Gold Coast bookkeeper and Registered BAS Agent. She’s also my partner, and helping her build a proper site for her practice is where a lot of my web work started, including the research that became The Once-Over.

The brief was never just to look good. A small practice needs the right local businesses to find it, understand what it does, trust it, and get in touch. The website is where all of that either happens or doesn’t.

Website and CMS

A modern site she can actually run

The site is built with Next.js, with Sanity as the content backend. Services, Expert Advice articles and business details like her BAS Agent registration all live in Sanity, so Patricia can update the content herself without touching code.

The structure follows how people actually choose a bookkeeper: clear pages for ongoing bookkeeping, BAS and IAS, payroll, Xero and catch-up work, a plain explanation of the difference between a bookkeeper, a BAS agent and an accountant, and a registration anyone can verify with the Tax Practitioners Board.

Search and AEO

Easy to find, easy to understand

Search engine optimisation covers the fundamentals: fast pages, clean structure, proper metadata, and structured data that describes the business, its services and the area it serves.

Answer engine optimisation goes a step further. More people now ask AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude to recommend a business, so the content answers real questions plainly and the business details say the same thing everywhere. It’s the same thinking The Once-Over checks for.

Acquisition

Paid search with somewhere to land

Google Ads campaigns reach people already searching for a Gold Coast bookkeeper. Rather than dropping that traffic on the homepage, the ads lead to a dedicated landing page written for that search, where every call to action points to an enquiry or a phone call, and each enquiry is tagged with where it came from.

Measurement is built in rather than bolted on. An enquiry only counts once the server confirms it was actually delivered, a tap on the phone number is recorded as a tap rather than a call, and paid clicks are kept in a first-party record so obviously automated traffic can be spotted.

Under the hood

One connected system rather than a website plus a pile of marketing tools. Content, discovery, acquisition and measurement all point at the same outcome: a real enquiry from the right kind of business.

What I learned

A website is part of how a business wins work

For a service business, the site isn’t a brochure. It sits in the middle of how new customers discover, assess and contact the business, and every decision on it, from page structure to tracking, should serve that.

Building it properly also meant learning how search actually works now that people ask AI systems as well as Google. That question became The Once-Over.
